Natural Web Traffic Versus Paid Traffic

If you own a website, you have one thing in common with every other website owner. Your website needs traffic. Driving visitors to your site is considered the most important thing by many industry experts. Without visitors to your site (that’s what internet traffic is) you will never get them to buy your product, or click your link, or sign up for your newsletter.

Okay, so everyone knows they need traffic. What’s not as obvious is how to get it. Everyone seems to have different formulas for getting traffic to your website. Many of the techniques are trendy. Some are black-hat. Others only are effective in certain countries. But all website traffic essentially comes down to this: free (natural) traffic, or traffic you buy.

Certain SEO gurus say that all traffic costs something. They say that all web traffic costs you something – either money, time or work. While that is true, we will still use the term “free traffic” in the same way most people use the term natural or organic traffic. Natural traffic is any traffic you receive that you did not directly pay for. Natural traffic can have many different sources. It can come from people finding you in the search engine results and clicking on the link to your site. Organic traffic can come from someone clicking on a link found in a different website. Web Design, increase your usability

It is easy to make a dorky web page. It’s also easy to make a very nice, clean, professional-looking web page even if you don’t have much design experience. Often the difference, even for beginning designers, is simply a matter of eliminating certain features that are guaranteed to make a page look amateurish. I’ve been going through the list of things that people – designers and non-designers – from around the country have cited as the things that make the difference between a well-designed and a poorly designed web page.

Here’s a list of ten additional design elements that will increase the usability of virtually all sites:

  1. Place your name and logo on every page and make the logo a link to the home page (except on the home page itself, where the logo should not be a link: never have a link that points right back to the current page).
  2. Provide search if the site has more than 100 pages.
  3. Write straightforward and simple headlines and page titles that clearly explain what the page is about and that will make sense when read out-of-context in a search engine results listing.
  4. Structure the page to facilitate scanning and help users ignore large chunks of the page in a single glance: for example, use grouping and subheadings to break a long list into several smaller units.
  5. Instead of cramming everything about a product or topic into a single, infinite page, use hypertext to structure the content space into a starting page that provides an overview and several secondary pages that each focus on a specific topic. The goal is to allow users to avoid wasting time on those subtopics that don’t concern them.
  6. Use product photos, but avoid cluttered and bloated product family pages with lots of photos. Instead have a small photo on each of the individual product pages and link the photo to one or more bigger ones that show as much detail as users need. This varies depending on type of product. Some products may even need zoomable or rotatable photos, but reserve all such advanced features for the secondary pages. The primary product page must be fast and should be limited to a thumbnail shot.
  7. Use relevance-enhanced image reduction when preparing small photos and images: instead of simply resizing the original image to a tiny and unreadable thumbnail, zoom in on the most relevant detail and use a combination of cropping and resizing.
  8. Use link titles to provide users with a preview of where each link will take them, before they have clicked on it.
  9. Ensure that all important pages are accessible for users with disabilities, especially blind users.
  10. Do the same as everybody else: if most big websites do something in a certain way, then follow along since users will expect things to work the same on your site. Remember Jakob’s Law of the Web User Experience: users spend most of their time on other sites, so that’s where they form their expectations for how the Web works.

Is SEO dead?

I was reading a thread at a big webmaster forum yesterday which made the claim that “SEO is dead.” Now, it’s hard to say whether or not the original poster was being serious or sarcastic, but he referenced some other news he’d been reading on a few authority sites that made the “dead” claim.

The notion was that, because of the prevalence of Web 2.0 community sites, the idea of needing to optimize for any of the engines was going away — and fast. The idea was also put forth by another poster that, because of the huge number of content management systems that are already setup to be “search engine friendly”, the need to have any additional knowledge to rank well was quickly diminishing.

My answer to all this? Poppycock.

First, while it is true that there are many CMS programs that are search engine friendly out of the box, on-page factors matter so little to ranking (at least in Google) that even if the on-page playing field was leveled, it would make little difference in the current search engine results.

Second, SEO is about far more than just what’s on the page. The way you analyze what keywords are worth optimizing for, the way you write the content around those keywords, and the links you get to the pages that you want to rank for those keywords all have a large role to play in how much traffic you get from the search engines — and that analysis takes specialized knowledge. Anyone can learn to do it, but it does have to be learned.

Third, and most importantly, Web 2.0 is nice, and sites that revolve around that kind of community are huge traffic mongers (e.g. YouTube), but there will always be a need for full-text indexing of the web.

So is SEO dead? Nope. It’s alive and well, and will be for as long as people need to search for information on the web.
